Besides the Oktoberfest, which is the most sought after beer festival in the world October is also a good time to explore the region with fewer tourists. This beer festival originated in the Munich region of Germany and is a 16-18 day festival celebrated from mid-September till the first Sunday of October. What the festival entails is many big and small tents being set up where specially brewed beer from specific breweries is served along with food, games, stalls and even a parade.
You can easily club it with Cannstatter Volksfest or the Stuttgart Beer Fest as its often called and held in Stuttgart. The festival has many amusement rides, stalls and a parade as well. A lot of beer is of course a part of the festivities along with fireworks on 3rd October and the agriculture exhibits.
Stuttgart is easy to reach from Munich and a gateway to the Black Forest region of Germany. One must add a few nights beyond the festival to explore this fantastic region known for its scenic beauty, spa towns like Baden Baden, cuckoo clocks and most importantly drive on the the Autobahn- where there are no speed limits!
If you plan to stick to just Munich for the Oktoberfest then do visit the shopping outlets, the BMW car museum and the Olympic Stadium. There are Salt mines nearby that can be visited on day-trips as well as fairy tale castles. Mountain peaks like Zugspitze offer beautiful snow capped views of the mountains and must be added to your itinerary if time permits.
Munich & Stuttgart temperatures see highs of 14°C and lows of 6°C with minimal rainfall and 10 hrs of daylight. Its a great time to explore the outdoors and explore the countryside.
