Looking to visit Europe in January but still want the amazing European summer vibe? Don’t worry we got you covered. Canary Islands offer 7 amazing islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro each with its own flavor and charm.

Why visit Canary Islands in January?

The weather is beautiful and it’s not as busy as December but not completely dead like spring and autumn months. Due to moderate traffic even flight costs from mainland Europe are attractive.

Another reason why it is ideal to visit in January is that Canary Islands can be reached only via a flight from mainland Europe or UK, both of which are in peak winter. This means you can easily spend a few nights on mainland Europe and enjoy the romance of winter and the amazing fairytale landscapes covered in snow along with winter activities before you fly into the tropical paradise of the Canary Islands. It’s like having the best of both worlds, European Summer and Winter both on the same trip.

Canary Islands weather in January

It varies from Island to Island but an average high of 22°C and low of 15°C makes it ideal weather for us Indians. Sea Temperature is about 20c almost through the year which is a bit cold for us but there are beaches with warmer currents which we can point out to you. Little to no rainfall can be expected on most islands but some do have light rainfall in January. It is ideal weather for hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities as it is not too hot.

Our Favourite things to do in Canary Islands in January

Sail around La Gomera to see the dramatic Los Organos

The natural vertical pillars of cooled lava that look like church Organ pipes. You will also get to see whales, dolphins and can go around the entire island past beautiful valleys, sheer cliff-faces and isolated inlets where we stop to swim and snorkel.

Visit the highest peak of not just Canary Islands but all of Spain

Mount Teide on Tenerife is a volcanic peak covered in snow generally and is one of the best places for star gazing. We love watching the sunset here followed by a romantic dinner and a star gazing experience unlike any.

The quintessential European beach experience on the island of Gran Canaria

On Gran Canaria Playa del Inglés is ‘the’ place to hang out, it’s a popular beach for sunbathing, surrounded by many restaurants and beach clubs as well as big resorts. Shopping, nightlife and theme parks as well as tourist activities like camel rides on the huge sand dunes and golf courses abound here.

Enjoy a camel ride on majestic sand dunes and walk the fragrant pine forests Gran Canaria, a mini continent

The island is popular with tourists and has fantastic hotels, wellness facilities, restaurants and nightlife as well as many diverse natural marvels.

Take in the otherworld landscapes of Lanzarote that produce out of this world wines

We cant get enough of Lanzarotes’ unique landscapes that make you wonder which planet you are on and its Malvasia wines which are so special they have the label of Designation of Origin, one of the highest labels a wine can be given by European standards.

You will be blown away by the Emerald green beaches and whites sands of Fuerteventura, literally!

This island is paradise for beach lovers and windsurfers. The island is also known for its scrumptious food and cheeses. Eat, beach and repeat is the mantra here.

Hiking the 1000kms of trails on La Palma

This island is every nature enthusiasts dream with some of the world's clearest skies, its black sand beaches and hikes through deep gorges and lush jungles.
