The most popular thing to do in Botswana is to see wildlife and the best time to see wildlife in Botswana is the dry season from May to September. Most tourists come in July and August but May is actually equally good with far lesser crowds and better prices at the wildlife lodges.
In May the landscape is still green, but seasonal waterholes are rapidly drying up and animals are arriving at permanent water sources like the Chobe River, Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve. Since it’s the dry season it is also possible to drive onto the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, one of the largest in the world!
Botswana weather is extreme so while the day temperatures can be almost 28°C in the day at night it can drop as low as 10°C. Pack keeping this in mind. Rainfall is minimal in May.
