Overview Fiji Islands

Fiji Mainland
Fiji is an island nation and hence there is no mainland in true sense of the word but its two biggest islands Viti Levu and Vanau Levu are considered the mainland.

Viti Levu
The biggest and most developed island of Fiji, Viti Levu is your gateway to this island paradise. All international flights land in Nadi located on the west of the island where as the capital of Fiji, Suva is to the south of the island. The main attractions on Viti Levu besides the many resorts with their spectacular accommodations and beaches are Port Denarau, cannibal Naihehe Caves, Sigatoka sand dunes, the orchid collections of the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and Sabeto mud pools and hotsprings.

Besides these sites you can go rafting and kayaking in the Navua river and its canyon, visit Fijian tribal villages and witness their ceremonies and customs, try activities like para-sailing, sky diving, ATV safaris, zipping, trekking , all water sports, sailing and traditional bili-bili bamboo boat rides on the rivers of Viti Levu.

For entertainment and shopping Port Denarau is a great option and is very close to the airport. Here you can book all above mentioned excursions and activities or hop off on a cruise to the Mamanuca group of islands, Fijis best island group. Many of the cruises take day-trippers from the mainland, who gorge on buffets washed down with Fiji Bitter on the islands and sunbake on white sand beneath coconut palms. The ocean around the islands has some excellent dive sites and Fiji's gnarliest surf spots. The snorkelling here is generally fantastic with the clear waters offering fascinating windows into the undersea world.

Vanau Levu
The second largest island of Fiji, Vanau Levu is more secluded and far less populated than Viti Levu. You can get here by flights from Viti Levu or by boats which take a lot longer. Main towns here are SavuSavu and Labasa. SavuSavu is where most tourists get off to go to the amazing resorts on the southern coast. Labasa is more of a commercial town.

Main attractions on Vanau Levu besides the usual Fiji attractions are the luxury resorts spread in acres, the Hibiscus highway- a road by the southern coast with scenic views which many tourists like to cycle or drive down. The southern coast of Vanau Levu also offers get-off points to the best dive sites of not just Fiji but the world. Tauveni island famous for its reefs is also not far from the Hibiscus Highway. There are many forest walks and waterfalls to explore and most resorts here have one they can take you to. The small (population 2,800) waterfront town of SavuSavu is best described as rustic, the yacht club is the favorite local hangout, and the classic local market (fruits, fish, veggies, woven baskets and mats) is always worth a stop on Saturdays.
